Kotaku reports that this game was code-named Viking. It was to be a spinoff to the publisher’s Star Wars Battlefront series, featuring open-world elements. The game was also supposed to be released this year, to go with the next-generation consoles. Unfortunately, the development of the game wouldn’t make it in time for the consoles’ release. Realising that, the EA execs called the project off.

That said, there’s quite the interesting story behind its cancellation. Viking was initially handled by EA’s Vancouver studio, before Criterion – better known for the Need for Speed series – was brought in. But it appears that both studios had their own ideas for the game. As a result, Viking was set to miss its deadline. And as you’d expect, the decision makers at EA were not interested in extending the deadline. This brings the Star Wars kill count by EA up to three. Prior to Viking, project Orca was cancelled, as was its previous incarnation, Ragtag, written by Amy Hennig. (Source: Kotaku)
