WABetaInfo revealed that listings mentioning WhatsApp have been found in Messenger’s local database. These references point to the creation of tables in the database which are required to manage messaging and services. Since both messaging applications run on their own framework, servers and end-to-end encryption, the added tables imply that a new protocol is being implemented to support cross-messaging with the company’s subsidiary messenger service. The reason why this solution is required is mainly because WhatsApp stores chat information and contact details on-device (which can be backed up online), whereas Messenger solely relies on cloud storage. So in a way, the latter will need to import messages from the former to its local database in order to include chat history and enabling cross-app messaging. WABetaInfo notes that it isn’t known if Facebook would upload this local database in order to sync it across devices, a feature that is not supported by WhatsApp. The site added that this integration is merely speculation for now, and it’s uncertain if the company would actually introduce this integration in the near future.
