Back in May 2020, Intel has announced that it aims to have all of its facilities throughout the world to be running on renewable energy by 2030. This target is part of a larger long-term corporate responsibility plan called RISE 2030.
Working together with NEFIN, the solar farm which has a total capacity of 4.1MW was implemented throughout the company’s campus in Penang as well as at Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah. Despite the global pandemic, Intel who began the construction of the farm last year still managed to get it up and running by January 2021. Altogether, around 50,208 square feet of buildings’ rooftops within both of these Intel facilities have been covered by solar panels. Additional solar panels have also been installed on the roof of around 900 car park spaces.
Intel also stated that the solar farm generates around 6000MWh of electricity which covers around 15% of the company’s global on-site solar power capacity and is estimated to carbon dioxide emission by about 3,800 tons. The solar farm is already in use to partially power both campuses during peak hours while their domestic hot water supply is now running on solar thermal systems as well. (Source: Intel.)
