The 12GB capacity chip was made by combining six 16Gbps LPDDR4X chips – which are based on the second-generation 10nm (1y-nm) manufacturing process – into one. It also measures 1.1mm thin; allowing manufacturers to keep phones thin while still packing a lot of RAM.
The 12GB DRAM chip also offers data transfer rates of up to 34.1GB per second, which will help with multitasking. In its press release, Samsung also says that having 12GB of RAM allows phone makers to take full use of features like artificial intelligence and quintuple-camera setups. Since the amount of RAM in smartphones is already gradually increasing as we speak, it is only a matter of time before we see 12GB RAM phones pop up in the market. We expect that to happen in a few more months time since Samsung is working to deliver “more than triple” the supply of its 1y-nm based 8GB and 12GB mobile DRAMs during the second half of 2019.
