Let’s jump in straight into the action: here are the results of all the tournaments that took place at SCG 2019:

Dota 2

The Dota 2 tournament at SCG 2019 received less attention than previous years to go with its comparatively smaller prize pool of RM30,000. However, the best active teams in Malaysia still made an appearance, leading to a grand final between 2 of the teams that can easily be considered the strongest Malaysian teams right now – Dota Hero and Flower Gaming. Led by star player ddz, Flower Gaming performed a clean 3-0 sweep in grand finals to claim the title of SCG Champions, with RM12,000 cash prize to boot. This made it the second consecutive SCG championship for ddz after winning it as part of team High Ground last year, while Dota Hero also finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive year.

FIFA 20

This was probably the most gruelling tournament of the event thanks to the fact that there were 256 individual players fighting for a piece of the RM55,000 prize pool. The 256 players were then divided into a whopping 64 different groups for pool play, with the top 2 players from every group proceeding to the elimination stages. In a true test of physical and mental fortitude, the players in this tournament would have had to defeat 9 different opponents each in order to make it to the stage of the grand finals.

In the end, Mirza Nabil “Bale” of Klasiko Esports emerged as the champion, taking home the biggest individual prize out of all the SCG 2019 winners: a well deserved RM15,000 all to himself.

Tekken 7

History was made in this year’s SCG Tekken 7 tournament as BOOST | ZABA became the first Tekken player to win back to back championships at the SCG with Flash Vision | Fate finished in top 3 for the second consecutive year as well. At the same time, NGY4M | GTM showed great improvement over the course of the past year to take 2nd place at this year’s tournament after finishing in 5th place last year. ZABA won a total of RM8,000 for his achievements while GTM and Fate took home RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively.

PUBG Mobile

The division that many fans considered to be the “main event” of SCG 2019, as it received the most attention from the audience on the main stage. In addition to that, the PUBG Mobile competition had quite an impressive production, regardless of its livestream or the venue’s setting itself.

The action was intense all the way through both days of the SCG as 16 of Malaysia’s best PUBG Mobile teams competed in 16 rounds where every single kill mattered for the entirety of the tournament, thanks to the RM100,000 prize pool that was at stake. Last Survivor R2K and N.E.D Brotherhood looked like the two most dominant teams for the majority of the tournament, as Last Survivor R2K held a tight grip on the no.1 spot going into the last few rounds, while N.E.D Brotherhood had the most chicken dinners out of all the teams at the tournament.

However, it was team Yoodo Gank who proved that they were a top class team by winning the very last round of the tournament to nab first place, showing why they deserved to be Malaysia’s representative at the PMCO Gobal Finals. Yoodo Gank received RM40,000 for winning SCG 2019, while Last Survivor R2K and N.E.D Brotherhood earned RM20,000 and RM10,000 respectively – a decent prize for their impressive performance throughout the weekend.

Although the prize pool for this year’s Selangor Cyber Games was slightly lower than last year, the level of competition in the main title’s was higher than ever, boding well for the Malaysian esports community and demonstrating that our country is home to a large group of passionate and talented competitors. Hopefully, this momentum can carry forward to more national esports tournaments in the coming year to further encourage Malaysia’s local esports talents. (Source and Images: MET Malaysia.
